Introduction

Students explore the role of businesses in Australia’s taxation system, including how businesses collect, report and pay taxes that constitute the majority of the government’s revenue. The focus is on taxes that are collected and reported using a business activity statement. Students have the option to apply their understanding by completing an online BAS for a hypothetical business.

Suggested activity sequence

This sequence is intended as a framework to be modified and adapted by teachers to suit the needs of a class group. If you assign this activity to a class, your students will be assigned all student resources on their 'My learning' page. You can also hand-pick the resources students are assigned by selecting individual resources when you add a work item to a class in 'My classes'.

Part A: Group research task

  1. As a class, read the explainer. Alternatively, have students read the explainer individually and encourage them to take notes using the Cornell note taking system.

  3. Invite students to share their group’s decision about trade-offs.

Part B: Completing an online BAS

  1. If students are interested, have them complete an online BAS by following the instructions. They will need to access the ATO online services simulator.
