Introduction

In this set of interconnected learning experiences students investigate and evaluate some of the ways the Australian Government uses tax to fund health, safety and wellbeing and how this can support adolescents who are going through change and transition. Students propose messaging that will engage young people in healthy behaviours.

Australian Curriculum or Syllabus

Achievement standard

By the end of Year 8, students analyse factors that influence identities, emotions and responses to change, and describe strategies to respond to these influences. They analyse how stereotypes, respect, empathy and valuing diversity influence relationships. Students analyse the effectiveness of assertive communication strategies, protective behaviours and help-seeking strategies applied online and offline. They analyse health information and messages to propose strategies that enhance their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing. Students apply and transfer movement skills and movement concepts across a range of situations. They implement and evaluate the effectiveness of movement strategies on movement outcomes. Students propose and evaluate strategies designed to achieve personal health, fitness and wellbeing outcomes. They select, use and refine strategies to support inclusion, fair play and collaboration across a range of movement contexts.

Suggested activity sequence

This sequence is intended as a framework to be modified and adapted by teachers to suit the needs of a class group. If you assign this activity to a class, your students will be assigned all student resources on their 'My learning' page. You can also hand-pick the resources students are assigned by selecting individual resources when you add a work item to a class in 'My classes'.

Part A: Health for us

  1. Introduce the idea that the Australian Government uses tax to fund health, safety and wellbeing.
  2. Use a grouping strategy to organise students into pairs.
  3. Students work collaboratively to complete the health for us investigation.
  4. As a class, discuss:
    1. how each initiative impacts on young people and the examples they have used to illustrate this
    2. how services were prioritised and why.

Part B: Check it out

  1. Brainstorm health, safety and wellbeing programs funded by the Australian Government. Two specific examples include:
  2. Record ideas on the board.
  3. Use a grouping strategy to organise students into small groups.
  4. Students work collaboratively to complete the check it out investigation.

Part C: Spread the word

  1. Introduce the concept of interventions as they relate to health.

Interventions are a combination of programs or strategies designed to change behaviour to improve the health of individuals or a whole population. Interventions include education programs, advertising campaigns, policies, levies and taxes and environmental changes such as landscaping or renovations.

  2. Use the visualiser to provide students with the instructions for the activity.
  3. Original pairs of students complete their advertisements and present them to the class.
