Students analyse a range of primary sources to explore the various perspectives on the unemployed that existed during the Great Depression and World War II. They examine how and why views about the role of the State in providing welfare changed during this period. 

Students explore what life was like during the Great Depression for different groups of people. They analyse a range of sources to draw conclusions about how life was affected by the Great Depression and the experiences, thoughts and feelings of people at the time. This activity brings together a number of historical concepts, including historical empathy, sources and evidence.  Share to Google Classroom    

Students develop an understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur and the qualities of successful entrepreneurs. They reflect on the importance of entrepreneurialism and developing an entrepreneurial mindset for success in 21st century work and enterprise. Students complete a questionnaire to consider where their own strengths lie and identify actions they could take to strengthen the qualities they need to achieve their ambition.

Students explore what life was like in the period leading up to World War II and examine sources to identify the possible causes and effects of changes to the welfare system in the period between the Great Depression and the present day. They write a bibliography listing the primary and secondary sources they consulted and develop an evidenced-based explanation of the causes and effects of changes to Australia’s welfare system.  

In this activity, students learn about how different levels of government provide support to the self-employed and consider whether support for entrepreneurialism is a good use of taxpayers’ money.
