In this suite of activities, students consider tax types which make significant contributions to government revenue and critically analyse how changes in excise affect production and consumption. They use technology to manipulate and display data.

Students learn about how government is formed, including the role of political parties and independents. They explore the relationship between voters in a representative democracy, the ways laws are made, and the process of a Bill becoming a law from the stage of an idea to Royal Assent. They participate in a mock parliamentary debate on a tax Bill in order to understand the nature of parliamentary debates.

They explore issues of fairness for women and men in the outcomes of Australia’s superannuation system and, as a way of appreciating how Australia’s democratic processes are designed to allow many voices to be heard, they explore the process through which policy is shaped.

Students investigate the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the Western Sydney airport development on the area of Badgerys Creek. They consider how the development will affect different stakeholders and the liveability of the Badgerys Creek region. This activity focuses on the geographical concepts of place, space and interconnection.

Students explore how groups and outside bodies sometimes seek to influence government policies for their own purposes. They learn about media ownership and influence and explore the role of bias, misinformation, disinformation and fake news in influencing and shaping public opinion.

In this activity students learn that bank statements are a rich source of information and can be used as a money management tool. It teaches them the difference between credit and debit and that managing money involves keeping track of their income and spending. This learning provides a foundation for students to understand how individuals and businesses manage their income and expenses through record keeping.
