Suggested activity sequence
This sequence is intended as a framework to be modified and adapted by teachers to suit the needs of a class group.
- Explain to students that there have been a number of policies introduced by the Australian Government that are aimed at promoting equity. Students will investigate one superannuation policy and make a judgment on how successful it has been in achieving this goal.
- Students read the explainer. Encourage students to take notes using the Cornell note taking system as they read.
- Ask students to identify the policies mentioned in the explainer and record their answers on the board.
- Use a grouping strategy to organise students into pairs.
- Pairs conduct their investigations.
- Give students sufficient time to research and prepare their presentations.
- Pairs present their findings to the class.
- List the superannuation policies students investigated on the board.
- Students rank these policies in order of their effectiveness in promoting equity in the distribution of income and wealth.
- Think-pair share: What impact will Australia’s demographic trends have on young people, their retirement and the superannuation system?
