Tax, Super + You wins IPAA Award

IPAA learning award 2021-22

Tax, Super + You wins the 2021-22 Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) Spirit of Service Award in the learning category. The IPAA Spirit of Service Awards reflect leadership and excellence practices in the contemporary public sector and recognise initiatives that drive positive change for the Australian community.

The ATO Schools Education Strategy team identified that many young Australians lacked the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage their taxation and superannuation affairs, and that this had adverse impacts on their future financial decisions.

Every child deserves to leave school with the core life skill of understanding tax and super. Ideally all young Australians will eventually participate in the workforce and be actively engaged in both systems. Therefore, it is essential they be provided with a sound educational grounding in tax and super and learn to effectively participate in these systems.

To help achieve this aspiration, the ATO Schools Education team worked with teachers to develop the new Tax, Super + You website as a simple, accessible and engaging online learning resource to help secondary school teachers foster these core skills.

IPAA judges comments

The IPAA judges were excited by the idea of equipping the next generation with the knowledge and information for them to be savvy with tax and super to make informed decisions for their future. They acknowledged that this aligns with the vision of simplifying the self assessment process for taxpayers and encouraging trust in the system.

The judges noted this was a practical initiative which will have broad impact.
