Tax systems of countries in the Asia region
Access denied
Introduction
Students compare the size of the government sector (tax revenue and government spending as a proportion of GDP) of different countries in the Asia region. They analyse these statistics and use the Human Development Index (HDI) of each country to draw conclusions about how taxation systems impact on a country’s economic and social dimensions, such as health, education and living standards. Students select one country to compare with Australia and investigate differences between these economies in relation to the size and role of government, the distribution of income and living standards.
Topics:
- How economies differ
- The role of government and the impact of tax spending on quality of life and living standards
- The size of Australia’s government sector in relation to other economies
- Reasons for differences between economies in relation to income distribution, inequality and living standards

Suggested activity sequence
This sequence is intended as a framework to be modified and adapted by teachers to suit the needs of a class group. If you assign this activity to a class, your students will be assigned all student resources on their 'My learning' page. You can also hand-pick the resources students are assigned by selecting individual resources when you add a work item to a class in 'My classes'.
- Explain to students that they will be analysing data from countries of the Asia region to draw conclusions about the value of taxation systems and the role these systems play in the overall wellbeing of a nation.

- Explicitly teach how paragraphs are structured using the visualiser or refer students to the paragraph model.
- Students complete the worksheet, which includes writing a paragraph.
- Students conduct an investigation to compare Australia with one other country in further detail.
- Give students at least 2 lessons to complete the investigation.
