Students learn about the different business structures that exist and consider the advantages and disadvantages of each. They develop and apply criteria, including tax implications, to decide which business structure is more suitable in different scenarios.

They keep a spending diary to work out how much GST they paid in the course of a week and how much their class collectively paid. Students examine the role of governments when planning and operating a small business, such as the opportunities and threats that stem from government action and policies. They also explore the government organisations that provide support and advice to small businesses.

In this activity, students learn about measures governments can use to discourage the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) because of their effect on health. They predict the views of others in relation to taxing SSBs and conduct a survey to test their predictions. Students use data and collate results to decide whether taxes should be imposed on SSBs.

In this activity, students use a decision-making strategy to decide what the government should do when faced with a dilemma. They learn to use the PACED grid decision-making strategy to support their decision-making. Students learn that if the government wants to keep its budget in balance, additional spending on one public good will require compensatory action, such as reduced spending on other public goods and/or an increase in taxes.

In this activity, students develop an understanding of the need to manage their superannuation throughout their working life and the potential financial costs of not doing so, particularly in relation to having multiple super accounts. They learn that they can check and manage their superannuation accounts by setting up a myGov account.
